چکیده

Saul Kripke’s thesis that ordinary proper names are rigid designators is supported by widely shared intuitions about the occurrence of names in ordinary modal contexts. By those intuitions names are scopeless with respect to the modal expressions. That is, sentences in a pair like (a) Aristotle might have been fond of dogs (b) Concerning Aristotle, it is true that he might have been fond of dogs will have the same truth value. The same does not in general hold for definite descriptions. Since the scope property is accounted for by means of the intensions of the names and the descriptions, the conclusion is that names do not in general have the same intension as any normal, identifying description. However, the difference in scope behavior between names and description can be accounted for alternatively by appeal to the semantics of the modal expressions. On the account we suggest, dubbed ‘relational modality’, simple singular terms, like proper names, contribute to modal contexts simply by their actual world reference, not by their intension. It turns out to be fully equivalent with the rigidity account when it comes to truth of modal and non-modal sentence (with respect to the actual world), and hence supports the same basic intuitions. It also turns out to be model theoretically equivalent with rigidity semantics with respect to logical consequence, within the class of reflexive models with non-empty domains. Here we give the truth definition for relational modality models, and prove the equivalence results.

The modality effect in false recognition: evidence for test-based monitoring.

False recognition in the Deese/Roediger-McDermott (DRM) paradigm has been shown to be greater following auditory study than following visual study, but there are competing explanations for this effect. We generalized this phenomenon in Experiment 1, finding an equivalent modality effect for associative (DRM) lists and categorized lists. Because conscious generationand subsequent monitoring of r...

Modality and Databases

Two things are done in this paper. First, a modal logic in which one can quantify over both objects and concepts is presented; a semantics and a tableau system are given. It is a natural modal logic, extending standard versions, and capable of addressing several well-known philosophical difficulties successfully. Second, this modal logic is used to introduce a rather different way of looking at...

'It's just like you talk to a friend' relational agents for older adults

Relational agents—computational artifacts designed to build and maintain longterm social-emotional relationships with users—may provide an effective interface modality for older adults. This is especially true when the agents use simulated face-toface conversation as the primary communication medium, and for applications in which repeated interactions over long time periods are required, such a...

Discovering Knowledge through Multi-modal Association Rule Mining for Document Image Analysis

The paper introduces a descriptive data mining method to discover knowledge for the task of automatic categorization in document image analysis. We argue that a document image is a multi-modal unit of analysis whose semantics is deduced from a combination of textual content, layout structure and logical structure. So, the method considers simultaneously different modalities of document represen...

Contextual Modals

In a series of recent articles Angelika Kratzer has argued that the standard account of modality along Kripkean lines is inadequate in order to represent context-dependent modals. In particular she argued that the standard account is unable to deliver a non-trivial account of modality capable of overcoming inconsistencies of the underlying conversational background. She also emphasized the diff...
